Memorial Organ Recital: 5:30pm (S. Stephen's Event)

Tonight, instead of our regular services, S. Stephen's Church would like to invite everyone to their Annual Memorial Organ Recital. Organist James Busby always does a fantastic job with this concert, and, of course, a reception will follow.

Solemn Evensong: 5:30pm (S. Stephen's Event)

Tonight, instead of our regular services, S. Stephen's Church would like to invite everyone to a service of Solemn Evensong and Benediction sung by a visiting choir from All Saint's Church in Ashmont, MA. A reception will follow.

The first part of this service is similar to our service of Evening Prayer, but with more singing and more incense. The second part of the service focuses on adoration of Our Lord in the Holy Eucharist.

All are welcome to attend.

Holy Eucharist and Compline: 8pm

Take a little time out of your week for quiet and reflection. We begin these services with the celebration of the Holy Eucharist (Rite II). Following the Eucharist, there will be a time for silent prayer -about 15 minutes. Finally, we will close be singing the evening service of Compline.

This is a new service for us, so things may change a little bit as we figure out what works best.

Chant Workshop: 7-10pm

A one-time practical workshop to learn a little bit more about the musical tradition of the early Church, and how we use it in today's worship. We'll begin by exploring the history and development of the Western chant tradition, and then we will practice some of the basic chants. Finally, we will learn the chants for the evening service of Compline, and close by singing the service we have just learned.

All levels of musical ability and experience are welcome!

RI 9/11 Memorial: 2-4:30pm on the Main Green

On the afternoon of Sunday, September 11, Brown University will be hosting the State of Rhode Island's 9/11 memorial. From 2-4pm, there will be remembrances on the Main Green. At 4pm there will be a memorial service on the steps of Manning Chapel.

I strongly encourage everyone to come out for this. Our regular service will be canceled so that everyone can attend the memorial.

The diocesan memorial service will be held at 5pm at Grace Church in downtown Providence. Anyone is welcome to come with me.

Evening Prayer - Sundays at 5pm

Our main service every week is Evening Prayer which we say on Sunday evenings at 5pm. In this simple service, we use The Episcopal Book of Common Prayer Rite II (contemporary language), and we follow the lectionary appointed for each day. Dinner usually follows this service.

The principal focus of this service is praying the psalms and reading scripture. We usually say at least two or threes psalms, and hear two readings - one from the Hebrew Scriptures and one from the New Testament.

All are welcome to join us in this service of prayer and worship.
